Recession can play a havoc in the life of people. It affects the job market leading to unemployment and stagnation of growth in business. But one can invest in recession with the right mentality and by keeping calm. They are scary and risky but there are always few opportunities in the future.

Here are some of the tips for investing during a recession:

1) One can buy stocks on sale. When the recession hits the market many investors pull out of market. Thus, one can grab the opportunity of picking up good stocks on sale.

According to the study some experts say that stocks in sectors like information technology, financials, industries and consumer discretionary perform the best during recovery period.

2) Pay off the debts. The best investment for recession is the repayment of debt. According to the experts, one should focus on repairing the balance sheet. Other than controlling your expenditure it is better to reduce the personal debt first.

Remember recession is just a phase and the stumbling economy will become stable. So take heart and economy will bounce back. Study those historical trends.

The dividends that you get from the stocks will comfort you. So don’t fret.

3) Do not completely rely on the media. The negative headline will just freak you out more. The newspapers agencies sell more like this by spreading propaganda. Don’t be swayed by the hype created by media and keep the investment basics in your mind.

4) One can take advantage of the tax breaks. Do not allow inefficient taxation on the gains and reduce your returns. You can boost the funds immediately by going for tax relief on pensions. Economy will recover and the tumbling stock markets will go up.

5) Diversify your portfolio

Study thoroughly and get down to the nitty gritty of each and every detail. Keep your investment portfolio balanced and divide between fixed interest and equities. Ensure that the risk profile is maintained. Go for diversified low cost funds for risk reduction and rebalancing periodically. Diversification is a great investment strategy for risk reduction. However, long term investors don’t need to get intimidated by the recession. They should keep contributing on regular basis as it is all about what the stock prices will be after 5 or 10 or 20 years.

8) You have to play safe and remember risky investments are not everyone’s cup of tea. You might not get rich with the money market investments but keep in mind to maintain the value of your money during the recession.

9) The sun will come out tomorrow. The market will rebound. During recession one should focus on horizon and exposures should be managed. Make sure you maintain the capital and implement risk reduction in you reinvestment portfolio by diversification.

10) It is important to have enough cash in hand. Maintain a balance between your liquid assets and less liquid assets.
